Does My Rental Property Qualify?

To qualify, the rental home must meet the “low-income” criteria based on the tenants’ household income, not the landlord’s. The household income should be below 80% of the local average, or someone in the house must be enrolled in specific automatic qualifier programs (Medicaid, SSI, Free School Lunch, etc.). Complete our brief questionnaire to assess the eligibility of your rental property. Most upgrades will require your landlord’s participation in the rebate application process.

Also, keep in mind that if your rental home already uses an electric appliance of the same type, it won’t qualify for a replacement under this program. For example, if you have an electric heat pump for your heating and cooling needs, you won’t be eligible for a new one through this initiative. But don’t worry! If you’re replacing a gas furnace or another non-electric appliance, you can still get a new electric heat pump for your home.

Renter FAQs

The appliance program is being rolled out separately in every state, and the timeline varies based on your particular state. After qualifying through our questionnaire, FreeHeatPump.com will consistently provide you with updates on the progress and timing of your appliance upgrades!
No, your landlord is restricted from changing your rent due to the home upgrades. The IRA’s Landlord Agreement stipulates that, following the installation of the appliance upgrades, landlords must agree not to increase rent or evict tenants because of the new appliances.

Additionally, landlords commit to renting the home to a low-income tenant for the next two years. These restrictions aim to ensure stability for tenants and uphold the benefits of the appliance upgrades without causing any financial burden.

No, renters don’t directly qualify for tax credits on home improvements as homeowners do. However, the Inflation Reduction Act provides incentives that can indirectly benefit renters. These incentives include rebates on appliances and incentives for landlords to make energy-efficient upgrades, potentially leading to lower utility costs and increased comfort for renters.
